Well, the first pancake in my family, is me.

Ellie finds it hard to focus on boring stuff like homework and chores. She would much rather hang out with her BFFFL Arya or play improv games in drama class. Mum and Dad want Ellie to be more like her eight-year-old brother Stewart, or as Ellie likes to call him, Mr Perfect.

But Ellie has a truly excellent, fool-proof plan to get out of doing homework, chores and school for good: she’s going to become a famous teenage pop star!

Review

Ellie is a young girl who feels completely misunderstood. She daydreams, she struggles to control her emotions and words, and she gets anxious easily. Ellie in is Year 5 and she has a younger brother in Year 3, Stewart (aka Mr Perfect), and a very demanding 4-year-old sister, Bea.

Ellie has trouble concentrating on simple tasks, like putting her shoes on, and her parents are always saying that they wish she was more like Stewart! To make things worse, she is having a hard time at school, especially with Harriet, who thinks she is Ellie’s best friend but all she does is brag to Ellie about how good her life is. Her real best friend is Arya, who has been her friend since kindergarten, and they share a wonderful bond.

But Ellie has an excellent plan that means she will be able to do whatever she wants – she is going to become a pop star! Ellie decides she will need to be able to play piano to be a pop star. Her parents agree that she can have piano lessons - but they insist that Stewart will have lessons too. Now piano is just another reason for her to be compared to Stewart. How can Ellie prove to her parents that she is not like him, and that just being her is enough?

This is a fabulous story about acceptance, family life, siblings, friendship and understanding that we are all individuals. It will be enjoyed by all those in middle primary and up.
