A boy who doesn't believe in magic. An impossible world that will change his mind.
Eleven-year-old Benjamiah Creek believes in science, logic and the power of reason. He definitely does not believe in magic. But when he receives a mysterious gift in the post - a doll that can transform into a bird - he is led into the impossible (and most definitely magical) world of Wreathenwold, where dark secrets are lost amongst a vast labyrinth of streets.
Benjamiah soon finds himself swept along in a dangerous quest - led by the fierce and brilliant Elizabella, who is determined to solve the disappearance of her missing brother.
Will Benjamiah ever find his way home and discover his puzzling connection with this strange, enchanted world?
Benjamiah Creek does not believe in magic, it’s impossible. He only believes in science and a logical explanation for everything. He also loves books, and reads everything he can. When he receives a mystery doll in the post - and the doll suddenly changes into a monkey or a bird - he is sure there is a logical answer, until he is led through a hidden door into the magical world of Wreathenwold!
All the streets in Wreathenwold are a labyrinth and Benjamiah is soon completely lost. He is rescued by kind-hearted Hansel who takes Benjamiah home with him. Hansel’s daughter, Elizabella, is not very happy to see this stranger. She just wants her missing brother back and nothing is going to stop her finding him.
Benjamiah soon gets caught up in her quest and they set off together around this strange world. Will they be able to unravel her brother’s diary? And will Benjamiah ever find his way back to his own world?
This is an exciting and mysterious story that readers will love. Fast-paced with lots of magical and mesmerising adventures, this book is very hard to put down! Benjamiah and Elizabella form a strong friendship as they uncover some of the secrets that Wreathenwold is trying to hide. It has strong themes of family entwined throughout as well.
This is the first of what I’m sure will be a much loved series for upper primary and beyond.
