Alexis has no memory of life before the tsunami hit. He survived with an amulet around his neck and was adopted into a loving family. But he has struggled with mental health issues, always dreaming that the Shadow Man was about to get him.
His life changes when, on a school trip, Alexis and his best friend, Demi, are separated from the rest of the class at Stonehenge and find themselves transported to a secret alternate world. Here they meet up with two others and discover that they have each always had a secret amulet, representing the four elements and that they are the chosen ones, brought together to fulfil the prophecy of Light and Darkness as the four children of the elements.
First, they receive intense training before they embark of a frightening quest to recover their element’s gems, gems that will release their true power and once and for all defeat the darkness. Of course, not everything goes to plan ... and can they even defeat such powerful evil?
With many links to Alexis’ past, this is his mainly his story, particularly as he tries to find out his ancestry. But are some things better not known?
With the four teens representing each of the four elements it is a really easy to follow fantasy novel. The characters are wonderful and the story flows and increases in intensity as it goes along. With marvelous creatures like a huge dragon and a similarly frightening fire born phoenix, the quest is truly epic. Filled with themes of family, mental health and defeating the darkness, working together and unlocking your true power this is an ideal novel for all teenage readers of science fiction.
