Review

Eighteen years after the publication of the first book in Patrick Ness’s wonderful Chaos Walking trilogy we return to that world with this incredible new series, of which this is Book One. It can be read as a stand alone, although reading it might make you want to go back to the original series, it’s that good!

Humans have been cured of the noise, New World is peaceful, and we take up our story with the next generation, including the stars of our story, brothers Ben and Max. They have incredible parents, but the boys have never really gotten along. Their Mum is a scientist who Ben takes after. Their Dad is super brave and is a lot like Max. They are both always fighting to make the world that they inhabit a better place.

But a glyph has appeared in the sky and is nearing Earth, and teenagers are having nightmares that revolve around their worst fears. Could they be connected?

Then huge beings develop out of a fissure in a rock, and start taking teenagers and killing all that get in their way. Can Ben and Max stop this before they are all annihilated?

This is a fast-paced fantasy series that readers will devour! With the recurring theme that you are defined by the choices you make, and showing the gap between adversity and privilege for the different inhabitants of New World, it also covers issues of fear, power and propaganda. This is an ideal read for those aged from 13 to 18 years.
