On Thursday afternoon, five students at Bayview High walk into detention. Bronwyn, the brain, is Yale-bound and never breaks a rule. Addy, the beauty, is the picture-perfect homecoming princess. Nate, the criminal, is already on probation for dealing. Cooper, the athlete, is the all-star baseball pitcher. And Simon, the outcast, is the creator of Bayview High's notorious gossip app. Only Simon never makes it out of that classroom.
Before the end of detention, Simon's dead. And according to investigators, his death wasn't an accident. On Thursday, he died. But on Friday, he'd planned to post juicy reveals about all four of his high-profile classmates, which makes all four of them suspects in his murder. Or are they just the perfect patsies for a killer who's still on the loose?
Everyone has secrets, right? What really matters is how far you would go to protect them.
This is a modern day murder mystery set in a school situation that grabs you from the outset.
When five, variously high achieving, and all good looking kids get a detention for having a phone in class and one dies from a severe anaphylactic shock, the four that are left are all suspects.
However Simon, now deceased, was the creator of Bayview High’s notorious and always correct gossip app, and he obviously had something big on all four suspects.
Then follows a media circus and police ineptitude, that takes many twists and turns, before we finally uncover the truth.
In the meantime, we learn a lot about how people change and adapt under pressure, join forces when the world is against them, and the pressures of adolescent life particularly within a social media driven world.
It was a great read that I highly recommend to students 15 years and older.
