Book Of The Month Sf

Silas’s life is spiraling out of control when he receives an invitation from Eve to trek the Tasmanian wilderness, with a disclaimer: It will be cold. Remote. Treacherous. And I cannot guarantee passage home alive. The trek is a sheer vertical climb. In Antarctic conditions. Subject to violent storms. Untamed, unpeopled and dangerous. Also, exactly what Silas needs to reset his compass. But then a polar blast hits.

Perilously cold and cut off from help, Silas and Eve face a stark, gale-forced world. And one terrible choice. Choices are not always easy, even when they’re right. But Silas has never shied away from making tough decisions. Until now. Until this. Because this is the most brutal survival lesson. And sometimes the cost of saving a life can only be measured by the cost of losing one.

Review

This is a fabulous story about two teenagers, from very different worlds, who both share a love of the outdoors and pushing the boundaries of mother nature.

Eve is a feisty teenager who is home schooled and lives off grid with her strict and controlling parents. Silas has led a privileged life as the only son of famous alpinist and millionaire, Will Black. But the two things that they have in common are grief, and a passion for conquering the outdoors.

Their lives have crossed before, when they both competed in a survivalist challenge. But what is about to transpire will see them confront both their past and their futures head on, when Eve reaches out to Silas with a proposition and a challenge - that they climb the Western Arthur Traverse in Tasmania, which is as remote and dangerous as you can get, together!

Teaming up with a stranger is not something that Silas would ever have entertained, but his whole world is now in turmoil, so he reluctantly agrees.

This adventure is going to test them in more ways than they ever thought, as they are confronted with life changing decisions. They are both strong-willed and stubborn, but can they also find a common ground, and help each other heal from the guilt and the grief of what life has thrown at them?

This is not only a wonderful and suspenseful adventure story set in the Tasmania wilderness, but it is about family, family protectiveness, learning to let go, learning from others, accepting decisions, grief, love, and ultimately hope. It will be enjoyed by all teenagers.
