Description

Visiting his dad’s hometown in Japan four months after his father’s death would be hard enough for Ben. But one morning, the pain turns to fear: first, a massive earthquake rocks the quiet coastal village, nearly toppling his uncle’s house. Then the ocean waters rise, and Ben and his family are swept away—and pulled apart—by a devastating tsunami.

Can he fight hard enough to survive one of the most destructive disasters of all time?

Review

Ben is a young American boy who is grieving the loss of his father, who was an F-16 pilot, and who has only recently passed away.

He doesn’t want to go on this trip to Shogahama in Japan - a trip to see his uncle that his Dad had planned before he died, but his mother insists that they are still going. His little brother Harry is happy to be there, but Ben resists all attempts by his uncle to talk to him about his Dad, and to visit the places that his Dad did when growing up - Ben just wants to go home.

When an earthquake hits, Ben and Harry find themselves trapped. Can Ben draw on the strength of lessons given to him by his Dad to keep Harry and himself safe? And will they survive the massive wall of water that is about to hit?

This a moving graphic novel about family and connection, and finding courage in the face of adversity, that is based around a real event. It includes factual information at the back as well, and that like historical fiction will enjoy reading this. It is best suited to those in lower secondary and upper primary.
