Description

An enchanting, farm-fresh debut graphic novel starring an unusual heroine who is braver than she realizes, for middle grade readers looking for a cozy, adventuresome read in the vein of Witch Boy or Be Prepared.

Garlic feels as though she’s always doing something wrong. At least with her friend Carrot by her side and the kindly Witch Agnes encouraging her, Garlic is happy to just tend her garden, where it’s nice and safe.

But when her village of vegetable folk learns that a bloodthirsty vampire has moved into the nearby castle, they all agree that, in spite of her fear and self-doubt, Garlic is the obvious choice to confront him. And with everyone counting on her, Garlic reluctantly agrees to face the mysterious vampire, hoping she has what it takes.

After all, garlic drives away vampires… right?

Review

Garlic can never seem to get anything right. She is always late, and feels that she is disappointment to those around her. But not everyone thinks this - she has the support of her friend Carrot and Witch Agnes.

When Witch Agnes raises concerns that there could be a vampire living in the spooky abandoned castle, Garlic and all the others on the farm are scared for themselves, and for the people of the town.

Celery, who is not always very kind to Garlic, decides that it should be Garlic who goes to investigate, as Garlic wards off Vampires!

Garlic decides that she is going to have the courage to go and try and do something right for a change. What she encounters at the castle surprises them all, and Garlic learns a valuable lesson about believing in herself and not judging a book by its cover. Celery also learns a lesson too, but I don’t want to give away too much of the story!

This is a wonderful tale about believing in yourself and having the courage to take a chance. It will be enjoyed by middle to upper primary students.
