Review

This is the first in what is looking like becoming a terrific series. With a message about the power and joy gained through stories and storytelling, I was hooked very early on!

Sam is about to turn thirteen and he has lived a fairly ordinary life. His Mum died in an accident five years ago and his Dad has been slowly fading away ever since. Luckily, he has his best friend, Ish.

But as his birthday looms strange things start happening, and Sam discovers that he has special abilities - and bad people seem to be after him. And so the quest begins!

They soon meet the scary Goz, and when she realises that she has links to Sam the three of them join forces. They discover that evil people are trying to gain the powers that the secret society known as the Order of the Evening have been protecting for centuries. The society protect stories and storytelling throughout the world, which brings peace and joy all.

Mostly, things had laid dormant since the last Tempest was on earth around 500 years ago. A Tempest is one who holds the society’s ultimate powers and can protect them all. The prophecies say one is among them now, which can’t be a coincidence...

The premise is fascinating, the adventure is fast-paced, the characters wonderful and this book is a real gem. We get behind Sam and his team as they slowly uncover this strange but wonderful secret world, and I can’t wait for the next instalment. It will be loved by readers aged 11 to 14 years.
