Description

What do you do with a sick dragon, a concussed troll, or a unicorn with a broken horn? You take them to the only place that can help: Creature Clinic! From Super Sidekicks creator and New York Times-bestselling cartoonist Gavin Aung Than comes this action-packed and heart-warming graphic novel set in a magical hospital.

Welcome to Creature Clinic, where a team of dedicated doctors and nurses at the world's finest—and only—hospital look after mythical creatures. Here, everyone from trolls and unicorns, to tooth fairies and giants, can expect the very best treatment. Well, with one exception: humans are absolutely, 100% not welcome.

So when doctor-in-training Kara Orc discovers an injured human child at the hospital, her world is turned upside down. Sure, most humans are dangerous, destructive beasts, but Kara took an oath to help all creatures. Even humans deserve care and compassion! But how long can she keep such a big secret from her boss … who happens to be her mother? And what happens when the human child – whose name is Mitch – decides that he wants to stay at Creature Clinic?

Review

Kara Orc is a young doctor who lives and works at the Creature Clinic. Her mother is the boss, and doesn’t she know it! She works alongside Dr Tucker Wolf, who thinks he is superior to everyone else.

Kara’s best friend is the janitor, Oblong, and Tucker can’t believe that Kara is friends with him. This, in itself, sets the scene and gives you an indication of each of their personalities and character! The clinic is a hospital staffed with dedicated doctors and nurses – all unique creatures in their own right. It is a place that has a warm and helpful feel - except for Dr Orc, who certainly does not give off friendly vibes.

But the clinic is only there to look after mythical creatures – and definitely not humans, who are dangerous. So when a giant appears and is in need of help, it sets off a chain of events that will have a lasting impact on them all. Not that the giant is a problem, but the human named Mitch that is found in boot certainly is.

Kara and Oblong decide that they need to help him, but this goes completely against Dr Orc’s instructions. Mitch grows to love the clinic, and wants to stay. He knows he can be helpful and, in disguise, he proves just how useful he can be. But how long can they keep Mitch a secret from Dr Orc?

This is a fabulous graphic novel that is vibrant and full of magical and mythical creatures, but it is more than that. It has great messages about helping others, friendship, dealing with pressure and expectation, acceptance of all creatures, and standing up for what you believe in. It will be thoroughly enjoyed by those in middle and upper primary.
