Pf Book Of The Month

From the CBCA Award-winning author of The Little Wave comes the story of two extraordinary kids who discover the life-changing power of friendship and teamwork.

Eleven-year-old Jones Kirby has just moved to Sydney from her farm in country New South Wales. She's missing her alpacas and wide-open paddocks and can't get used to her family's tiny city apartment.

She's also worried that her vision is blurry - she lost her eye to cancer as a toddler. Could it be another tumour? Enrolling at her new school, Jones meets shy, awkward August Genting. He loves fun facts, the library and knitting as much as Jones loves rock climbing and being outdoors. Who would have thought they'd become fast friends? At home, August's parents are fighting. And for Jones, the news from the doctor is not good. To cheer themselves up, the pair hatch a brilliant plan: the August and Jones Must-See Bucket List.

Together, this brave duo will set out to meet a rare monkey, run across the Harbour Bridge and even climb Australia's highest mountain. After all, with your best friend beside you, anything is possible!

Review

Jones Kirby has just moved to Sydney to a tiny apartment, away from her beloved farm and all her animals.

On her first day at her new school, she meets August. He is shy, loves fun facts, enjoys the library more than the footy field, and would rather be indoors. Jones loves the outdoors more than anything, but these two soon become the best of friends.

Jones lost one eye to cancer when she was little and now she is worried it may have returned in her good eye. August’s parents are fighting, and things are difficult at home. To help each other cope, they plan ’August and Jones must see bucket list’ - and proceed to convince their parents to help them fulfil it.

When Jones’ fears come true and she loses her other eye, Jones and August decide that no matter what, they’ll follow through with their plan.

This is a heart-warming story of two wonderful, brave kids who face all their fears together and let nothing stop them. It is a story of friendship, love, hope, family and learning that even if you stumble and fall, you just need to get back up and try again.

Upper primary and lower secondary readers will love Jones and August, and this is sure to become a favourite.
