Description

A stunning graphic novel edition of the classic fantasy adventure, with a foreword by Theo Downes-Le Guin.

A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula Le Guin was first published in the UK in 1971 and has been considered a classic of children's fantasy ever since. It follows the story of Ged, a poor smith’s son, who discovers a magical talent and is sent away from home to a wizard school. During a duel with a fellow student, he summons a terrible shadow creature which he tries to banish, but it continues to haunt him long after he finishes his magical training. Finally he seeks advice from his old master Ogion, who tells him to confront the creature rather than flee it – that fears and shadows are to be faced, and that darkness is as much a part of us as the light.

A beautiful, skilful adaptation of a classic of children’s literature for a new readership and new generation – making this remarkable book accessible to visual, reluctant readers as well as graphic novel fans.

Born in the small village of Ten Alders, and originally named Duny, but also known as Sparrowhawk, this is the story of young boy whose magical ability was discovered when he was only young, after he saved his entire village.

Now carrying the name of Ged, he goes with the stranger Ogion, who agrees to teach him and look after him. But learning and honing his craft is something that will take patience. And this is not something that Ged has...

He finds himself on the island of Roke, where he is schooled with other wizards. He learns fast and has found a friend in Vetch, but not so in Jasper, who challenges him. And when Ged summons a spirit of the dead, we see him cursed and connected to it. Can Ged face the fear that is now around him and move on, or will this shadow be with him forever?

Fantasy lovers will thoroughly enjoy this fantastic graphic novel adaptation of this classic story, that features remarkable illustrations. It is suitable for those in upper primary school, as well as all secondary aged students.
