Review

Mersey’s Pa did a deal with the pirates fifty years ago, that has always kept her seafarers’ village safe and sustained. But now their crews are being randomly slaughtered, seemingly by the pirate’s leader, the Heartless King.

This means her Gran, who is the town’s leader, has banned ship movement and put Mersey’s dream of captaining her own crew on hold.

But Mersey can’t be land bound, and, in her attempt to kill the Heartless King she discovers that he is in fact immortal, and that he insists that he is not behind the slaughter. But who else could it be?

They hold Mersey on the Kings’ ship, and she falls hard for Golde, his right-hand woman. Golde is a brilliant fighter and spills blood many times during the book. Having lived for over 250 years herself, we learn of a curse where the crew cannot return to land without turning into stone. So why would they harm the village that has always provided them with the supplies that they need to remain at sea? Can Mersey and Golde find a way to break the curse, or will their love never be able to be fulfilled?

This is a gripping read with strong female characters, unlikely love, gore-filled fighting scenes, and lots of treachery and scheming that will entertain readers aged 13 to 17.
